Lateral movements of the mandible: Laterotrusion, Bennett movement, Bennett angle, Fischer angle

Lateral movement of the mandible is unique owing to the fact that both the condyles do not share the same path. The working condyle rotates at the terminal hinge position whereas the orbiting condyle undergoes translation referred to as Bennett movement. This movement occurs primarily while chewing food. Its influence on the intercuspation of teeth during mastication emphasizes its importance. Bennett movement has two components: immediate lateral translation and progressive lateral translation. Bennett angle is an angle formed between the path of non-working condyle and the sagittal plane. Fischer angle is the angle formed between the sagittal protrusive condylar path and sagittal lateral condylar path.
