The 1/5 Marines left Pendleton for Steel Knight looking like a normal battalion movement, then immediately dissolved into distributed operations across Southern California. That means instead of one big target, the enemy now has to track dozens of small units moving independently through terrain that already doesn't want to cooperate. Every platoon is its own headache, every squad is a potential ambush, and the whole thing is coordinated through radios that barely work in the hills.
