Cefalù, classically known as Cephaloedium (Ancient Greek: Κεφαλοίδιον), is a city and commune in the Italian Metropolitan City of Palermo

It is possible that Cephaloedium was at this time merely a fortress (φρούριον, phroúrion) of Magna Graecia belonging to the Himeraeans and may have been peopled by refugees after the destruction of Himera, settling alongside the native Sicels. Its name first appears in history at the time of the Carthaginian expedition under Himilco, 396 BC, when that general concluded a treaty with the Himeraeans and the inhabitants of Cephaloedium.

The Cefalù Cathedral is one of Sicily's major Norman monuments built by Roger II between 1131 and 1240 as an act of thanks to God after surviving a shipwreck nearby. In the Cathedral the Norman architecture and Arab, Byzantine, Latin and Nordic art are harmoniously combined in a wonderful synthesis of styles.

To settlers from the Greek mainland, Sicily was a new world of wealth and opportunity. Beginning in the late 8th century B.C., they founded colonies along the shores of the island they called Sikelia. Over time, young transplants from Greece proudly came to regard themselves as Sikeliotes—Sicilian Greeks.

A Greek myth tells of the sad love of the beautiful shepherd Dafni, the Sicilian Orpheus. Blinded by an enraged Juno for having betrayed his daughter Echenais, he was transformed by a merciful god Mercury into the imposing precipitous rock that dominates Cefalù and whose shape gave the city its name.
