Cynthia Erivo Breaks Silence On Ariana Grande Fan Incident At ‘Wicked’ Premiere

Cynthia Erivo is breaking her silence after a fan charged at Ariana Grande at the “Wicked: For Good” Singapore premiere. During a Nov. 20 appearance on the “TODAY” show, the actress addressed the incident, confirming that her instinct was to protect her friend and co-star. “I wasn’t really thinking, I just wanted to make sure my friend was safe,” she told NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, adding, “I’m sure he didn’t mean us harm, but I just – you never know with those things, and I wanted to make sure that she was ok. That was my first instinct, yeah.” Cynthia’s remarks come one week after an Australian man, Johnson Wen, jumped the barricade at the “Wicked” Singapore premiere and rushed toward Ariana and put his arm around her as she and Cynthia walked the red carpet together. Cynthia made instant headlines for swooping in within seconds to block Wen from her co-star. Wen has since been sentenced to nine days in prison after being found guilty of being a public nuisance.
