Lebanon: Debris, collapsed structures mark explosion epicentre at Beirut port

Damage and debris at Beirut’s port area Thursday showed the epicentre of the explosions that rocked the city earlier this week.

The powerful explosions, which took the lives of at least 135 people and injured at least 5,000, according to preliminary reports, took place Tuesday afternoon.

The blasts are thought to have been caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material which was reportedly stored without precautionary measures at the port, according to Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab.

Results of an investigation into the causes of the explosions are expected to be released in the upcoming days.
