Does Self Publishing Count As Being PUBLISHED.?

The question of whether self-publishing counts as being published has been a hotly debated topic. On the one hand, self-publishing is a viable pathway for writers, artists and other creators to get their work out into the world. Many books, podcasts and even websites have been created through this method of publishing. Self-publishing has also become increasingly accessible due to platforms such as Amazon Kindle or Apple’s iBookstore, where authors can easily upload their content and make it available for purchase within minutes.

On the other hand, traditional publishing houses and agents offer more rigorous vetting processes that require professional editing, marketing and promotion of works in order to reach larger audiences. While self-publishing offers some advantages with regards to speed and control over the final product, it will always be limited in comparison to the potential reach offered by traditional publishing channels—reaching both readers and industry professionals alike.

However, despite any limitations that come with self-publishing there is still much merit in choosing this route for new authors. As an example, various successful books have been released via self-publishing platforms such as John Locke's "Saving Rachel" series or Hugh Howey's "Wool" trilogy which were both originally released through Amazon's Kindle Direct Platform. These successes have opened up opportunities for many other authors who now recognize that self-publishing is indeed a legitimate form of publishing that can lead to great success when done correctly.
