The pope who stood trial after death, Rome 897

In 897 Rome, Pope Stephen VI staged the Cadaver Synod, exhuming Pope Formosus to try and condemn him. Fingers were severed, acts annulled, and the corpse thrown into the Tiber. Weeks later Stephen was overthrown; later popes nullified and revived the verdict in turn.
