French President Emmanuel Macron is making a “massive miscalculation” in the UK-EU free trade Brexit talks by hoping the UK will return to the negotiating table in 2021 and give in to the EU’s position on the talks.
The claim was made by an insider close to the talks who said the UK would not fold its hand to the EU and Prime Minister Boris Johnson will stand strong in the final days and hours.
It comes as chief negotiators Lord David Frost and Michel Barnier continue talks in Brussels tonight after the PM and EU chiefs such as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed top try and find common ground on the remaining issues before the end of the transition period on December 31st.
Transcript:
EMMANUEL Macron is making a "massive miscalculation" by assuming the UK will be forced to return for another round of trade negotiations next year if 2020 ends without a deal being, a Government insider has.
With just over a week before the end of the transition period, the prospects of a deal are in the balance as a of 11pm last night set by MEPs in order for it to be ratified by the end the year without any agreement. There has been little progress on the key points of state aid, fishing rights and the so called level playing field with UK cabinet ministers putting the chances of a deal at “less than 50 percent.”
UK negotiators are understood to believe Mr Macron is trying a calculated risk that no deal will be so Mr Johnson will cave in and accept Brussels' terms within weeks.
However, one source told the Telegraph: "If we leave without a deal there will of the Government, even though the Prime Minister has made it clear we will thrive either way.
"Why on earth would we go through that if we intended to go back to Brussels cap-in-hand a few weeks later and accept a deal we have already?
"If Emmanuel Macron thinks that's what's going to happen, he has made a massive miscalculation."
Another insider added: "Unfortunately, the EU are still to get the flexibility needed from member states and are continuing to make demands that are with our independence.
"We cannot accept a deal that doesn’t leave us in control of our own laws or waters."
EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier gave his update of the situation yesterday, claiming the UK must have control of its own waters, he tweeted: "In this crucial moment for the EU-UK negotiations, we continue to work hard with @DavidGHFrost and his team.
"The EU remains committed to a fair, reciprocal & balanced agreement. We respect the sovereignty of the UK. And we expect the same.
"Both EU & UK must have the right to set their own laws & control their own waters. And we should both be able to act when our interests are at stake."
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has reiterated his stance in the negotiations that he won’t under EU and sign an agreement that does not respect the UK’s sovereignty.
The PM’s official spokesman stated at a Westminster briefing: "Mr Johnson re-emphasised the desire to reach a free trade agreement - but not at any cost - and reiterated that any agreement must the independence and sovereignty of the UK."
"Like any sovereign country we must have the right to take our own decisions and to choose regulations that suit the UK.
"We cannot sign up to through the back door, the UK cannot be locked into the EU’s orbit."
