Only one barn owl chick hatched this year out of a clutch of three. I named this baby barn owl it Solo. Watch this video for an incredible insight into this owlets earliest days. This nest cam follows its story from the moment it chips out of its eggshell - watch it unfurl like a seed from the confines of its egg and see how its mother is instantly attentive. Watch how she slowly slides her long, taloned foot from under the barn owl chick, careful not to hurt its head.
This was the only egg to hatch and once the female realises the second chick will not chip out, she discards it. Watch how the male comforts the female when he returns to find this barn owl chick hasn't survived.
My cameras afford an insight into how these birds of prey care for their young in a way I've never been able to enjoy before. For instance, watch how the adult female holds her tiny, featherless chick to her breast to keep it warm whilst she feeds it.
