Outer Banks Wildlife: Episode 3, Ghost Crabs

The Atlantic ghost crab is one of the most common creatures you’ll spot on Outer Banks beaches. Known for their burrows that can reach four feet deep, these crabs survive by drawing moisture from damp sand and are most active at night to avoid predators. With their shifting colors, unique behaviors, and diet that ranges from clams to the occasional sea turtle hatchling, ghost crabs are a key part of the beach ecosystem. Nighttime “ghost crabbing” with a flashlight has even become a favorite activity for visitors, offering a fun way to observe these animals without disturbing them.
