It wasn't always smiles on the ice during this year's competitions.

Curling is a beautiful game of grace, poise and manners. But sometimes, fans are treated to something more.

While it takes impeccable balance to throw the stone and avoid other rocks while sweeping, even Olympic level curlers are prone to the occasional slip, trip and fall.

Matt and Becca Hamilton had no problem defeating Team OAR in their mixed doubles opener, but Matt did have a bit of trouble when it came to sliding on the ice.

0:41 Switzerland's De Cruz becomes latest curling rock victim
The road to an Olympic medal is paved with pain and tears, as Peter de Cruz can attest. De Cruz may have won a bronze medal as a member of Switzerland's men's curling team, but not before falling victim to the dreaded curling rock. Those things should really have an alarm system.

Sometimes, they even throw their brooms around (on accident, of course!).

On the curling ice, you never know when a broom might come flying through the air, as Team USA's Becca and Matt Hamilton saw first hand Saturday night.

Even mixed doubles gold medalist Kaitlyn Lawes had her brief moment of imperfection.

Canada may be the hottest team in mixed doubles, but even they're not immune to mistakes on the curling sheet.

2:35 The elegance of curling
Curling is a beautiful sport, full of emotion, wonder, success, failure and some unforgettable moments.

Whether curlers were perfect or had the occasional mistake, at the end of the day, all of them get a halftime snack, and that's what is truly important.

3:50 Curlers really love their mid-game snacks
Everyone knows the best part of sports is the postgame treats, but curlers love their treats so much they don't even wait until the game is over to chow down. The halftime snacks may be the most important part of any curling game.
