December 14th, 2013. Billed as “Danger Zone”, Marcos “El Chino” Maidana takes on “The Problem” Adrien Broner who makes the very 1st defense of his WBA Welterweight title. Going into the fight, Broner and Maidana had records of 27(22)-0 and 34(31)-3 respectively.

Adrien Broner was undefeated and world champion in 3 weight divisions; Super Featherweight, Lightweight and Welterweight. He was also a 5-1 betting favorite against Maidana.

In December 2011, Adrien Broner won his 1st world title via KO3 over Vicente Martin Rodriguez to earn the WBO Super Featherweight title. After one successful defense and a non title bout wins against Eloy Pérez and Vicente Escobedo, he challenged Antonio DeMarco for the WBC Lightweight strap and won via TKO8. He defended that title once against Gavin Rees before moving up two weight classes to 147.

In June 2013, Broner made his Welterweight debut in a WBA title fight challenging “The Magic Man” Paulie Malignaggi as Malignaggi looks to defend his title for the 2nd time. Broner would edged The Magic Man via a very close SD.

Adrien Broner is then set to take on El Chino as his 1st WBA title defense.

In February 2009, Marcos Maidana in his 1st world title fight takes on Andreas Kotelnik for the WBA Super Lightweight strap. Maidana lost the bout via a very close SD. However, Maidana would bounce back with 4 straight victories notably against Victor Cayo, DeMarcus Corley and a highly exciting and explosive bout against Victor Ortiz.

In December 2010, Maidana would earn his 2nd shot at a world title when he takes on Amir “King” Khan for the WBA Super Lightweight title. Maidana came back from an early body shot knockdown to wobble Khan late in the fight, but Khan was able to last the distance and won via UD.

In his next fight, Maidana once again challenged for the WBA title and in yet another competitive bout, beating Mexican legend Érik Morales via MD. He would make one successful title defense against Petr Petrov via KO4. He would move up to 147 next.

In February 2012, Maidana takes on Devon Alexander for his Welterweight debut. Despite a valiant effort, he lost a clear cut decision. However, Maidana rebound from the defeat with 3 consecutive knockout victories over Jesús Soto Karass, Martin Ángel Martínez and Josesito López to earn a crack at Broner’s WBA Welterweight Crown.

This fight is mostly one sided with Maidana landing power shots with left and right hands throughout the bout although Broner managed to retaliate with his own power punches in a few occasions. He was able to do better in the late rounds but it was hardly enough to put a dent into the judges’ scorecards. Broner was also knocked down in the 2nd and 8th rounds.

After the 8th round knockdown, Maidana was deducted a point for intentional headbutt. Broner on the other hand was warned nearly 50 times for excessive holding and the use of forearm, but referee Laurence Cole did not deduct a single point despite the countless warnings.

It is interesting to note that going into the fight, Maidana has an over 90% knockout ratio.

After the victory, El Chino would twice take on Floyd Mayweather Jr. twice (and lost both times) in two competitive bouts before retiring from the sport with a final record of 35(31)-5.

He had notable victories over Victor Ortiz, Victor Cayo, DeMarcus Corley, Érik Morales, Silverio Ortiz, Adrien Broner, Jesús Soto Karass, Martin Ángel Martínez and Josesito López.
