Radio Legs: A Journey Across Britain Through its Local Radio Stations, by John Osborne
Radio Legs is about the eccentric, obscure and adorable world of local radio. It’s a book full of memories, late night phone ins, stories and romance. Funny, nostalgic and emotional, this is a portrait of communities who rely on their local radio station, and times in their lives when radio has been vital.
I travel around the UK using local radio stations as my guide. The book is a geographical, cultural and historical exploration of how radio has evolved since Britain’s first mainland local radio station BBC Leicester first aired in 1967. I listen to a variety of different stations and get to know the eccentric people who still listen and get involved in their local station and those whose lives have changed because of local radio.
As well as travelling around listening to voices from the Highlands down to BBC Radio Guernsey where there’s a 24 hour knitting marathon on the beach. I also meet key showbiz figures who have been involved in local radio. Chris Tarrant talks to me about how local radio shaped his career and how Who Wants to Be a Millionaire started as a feature on his Capital FM Breakfast Show. I spend an afternoon with Made in Chelsea and Celebrity Big Brother star Ashley James, who is a regular voice on ultra-cool Hoxton Radio. I meet up with all sorts of people who tell me their fascinating, bewildering stories; rare insights that will be brought to life in Radio Legs – the most comprehensive book ever written about local radio.
