This is the story of Japanese-American baseball players who lost everything.
Deep dive into Japanese American baseball history (1920s-1940s) focusing on athletes whose careers ended through World War II internment. Historical context: Japanese immigration to California accelerated early 1900s, concentrated in agricultural regions (Central Valley) and urban centers (Los Angeles, San Francisco). Second-generation (Nisei) Japanese Americans born 1900s-1920s came of age during baseball's golden era, forming community teams, joining integrated semi-pro leagues, competing at high levels. Fresno Athletic Club, featured in opening photograph, exemplifies integrated baseball decades before Jackie Robinson's 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers debut. Chiura Obata (18 in photograph) represents generation of young athletes. December 7, 1941: Pearl Harbor attack triggered anti-Japanese hysteria. February 19, 1942: Executive Order 9066 authorized military to exclude persons from designated areas. Result: 120,000 Japanese Americans (62% citizens) forcibly relocated to internment camps—Manzanar, Tule Lake, Heart Mountain, Topaz, others. Athletic careers suspended: Baseball equipment confiscated or abandoned, teams disbanded, professional trajectories terminated. Within camps: Internees organized baseball leagues (Manzanar had nine-team league) demonstrating resilience and cultural preservation. Post-war: Most couldn't resume baseball careers—age, lost years, discrimination, economic necessity. This history remains underrepresented in baseball narratives despite integration preceding Robinson by 20+ years. Subscribe for Japanese American history coverage.
