The keyboard is a continuation of the type used in earlier mechanical rotary calculators.
An earlier version of this calculator (Mk VII) was sold in 1961 and is generally recognized as the world's first mass-produced commercially-available all-electronic calculator. Sumlock Comptometer Ltd. in collaboration with Bell Punch (a London, England Company) built and marketed the machine.
The electronics uses a Dekatron decade counter tube, cold-cathode switching tubes, selenium rectifiers, and vacuum tubes (thermionic valves).
