Go Lesson 8: Opening play with the 3_4 point and low approach move | Playing Go | N J Wildberger

When learning how to play Go, some basic familiarity with common opening patterns, called Joseki in Japanese, is essential. These are typically centred around the corner. In this video we look at what is historically perhaps the most common and thoroughly studied situation: where a play at the 3_4 point is followed by a low approach move.

There are many hundreds of established patterns here, but we just look at some of the more common ones. As a beginner, you won't immediately be able to see the reason why these are good patterns. Just take that for granted, and get used to the moves and resulting shapes that appear here. As you make progress, the reason for some of these moves will become clearer, but it is a good start to just see these patterns and get an intuitive feel for them.
