Global National: Sept. 30, 2020 | Fear that rising COVID-19 cases could overwhelm Ontario hospitals
Ontario continues to struggle amid rising COVID-19 infections. Public health officials say cases in the province are now doubling every 10 to 12 days, and if that continues Ontario could hit 1,000 cases per day by mid October. As Eric Sorensen reports, there are now fears that soaring cases could overwhelm the province’s health care system.
The Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) ended on Wednesday and with October’s rent coming due, many of Canada’s small business owners are anxious about the future. Mike Drolet has the details.
Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole was back at Parliament Hill on Wednesday after two weeks in self-isolation following a positive COVID-19 test. As Mike Le Couteur reports, it didn’t take long for the gloves to come off.
Only about three million Canadians have downloaded the federal government’s COVID Alert app. The federal government developed the app, but its up to provinces to use it. As Heather Yourex-West explains, some provinces are still waiting on changes to the app.
Warning: Disturbing content. Three investigations are underway into the death of Joyce Echaquan, the 37-year-old Indigenous woman who recorded her final moments alive in a hospital bed, as staff made racist and abhorrent remarks to her. As Felicia Parrillo reports, Echaquan's friends and family say this wasn't an isolated incident.
During this year's chaotic first U.S. presidential debate, U.S. President Donald Trump refused to condemn the Proud Boys, instead telling the white nationalist group to "stand back and stand by." As Jackson Proskow reports, Trump tried backtracking the remarks, but the damage has already been done.
The Vancouver International Film Festival is underway, but the 39th annual event will look different during the pandemic. Robin Gill explains what’s changed, and reports on the stiff competition organizers are facing.
