Oedipus Complex | Analysis of Freud's Most Controversial Theory - Part I

There is no issue in all of Freudian meta-psychology that has caused more trouble or been the focus of more intense criticism than his ideas about the Oedipus complex.

I am going to try to walk through the specifics of what he said why he said it what evidence he based his conclusions on and we will see where we end up at the end,

First the short definition:

In psychoanalysis, the Oedipus complex (or, less commonly, Oedipal complex) is a child's desire, which the mind keeps in the unconscious via dynamic repression, to have sexual relations with the parent of the opposite sex (i.e. males attracted to their mothers, females attracted to their fathers.

Sigmund Freud, who coined the term "Oedipus complex", believed that the Oedipus complex is a desire for the parent in both males and females; he deprecated the term "Electra complex", which was introduced by Carl Gustav Jung in regard to the Oedipus complex manifested in young girls. Freud further proposed that boys and girls experience the complex differently: boys in a form of castration anxiety, girls in a form of penis envy; and that unsuccessful resolution of the complex might lead to neurosis, pedophilia, and homosexuality. A child's identification with the same-sex parent is the successful resolution of the complex.

The 1905 publication had three essays on sexuality. Freud said it has justly been said that the Oedipus complex is the nuclear complex of the neuroses and constitutes the essential part of their content. It represents the peak of infantile sexuality, which through its after effects exercise a decisive influence on the sexuality of adults. Every new arrival on this planet is faced by the task of mastering the Oedipus complex. Anyone who fails to do so, follows a victim to neurosis. With the progress of psychoanalytic studies the importance of the Oedipus complex has become more and more clearly evident.

First off I think it is important to understand Freud to truly understand the meaning of the Oedipus Complex. According to Freud, the foundational basis of our identity, which remains profoundly unconscious and yet exercises of almost moment by moment influence over all of our actions. All of our feelings and to the point where Freud suggested that it is more powerful in terms of our behaviors and thoughts and feelings, and even our belief systems than anything we can intellectually come to grasp nearly intellectually about the outside world.

There were 3 Oedipus plays written by ancient Greek playwright Sophocles. It is essential I think to understand the centrality of the play "Oedipus Rex' to Freud's thinking about psychoanalysis and human development to realize Freud took this play very personally.

Freud also talks about defense mechanisms. Anytime you are in denial. Your denial of the truth because reality of folks in us more anxiety than we can tolerate. We cannot handle the truth. Hence the defense mechanisms. He talks about creativity. Creativity is disciplined by observation and a true creation artistic or scientific conveys amount and observation of some truth purely for the sake of conveying it not for the sake of using it as propaganda. The creative freedom to see things as they are and I think directly. This is the power given to those who can successfully work through the Oedipal complex Oedipus complex and its derivatives.

I think Freud's ultimate goal in the in the development and derivatives of of the Oedipus complex. If a child can allow & can identify with both parents, and allowed the relationship of the parents assuming they are a healthy. It is the Oedipus complex and the internalization of both parents and the parental relationship that provides for the first time the boy and girl child ability to a imagine relationships which they can observe and from which they themselves are observed as a separate person. It is essential that this development take place because it is only through its development that a sense of independent identity is formed. This is why I believe Freud thought that the resolution of the Oedipus complex was the central developmental of hand of human life. It is not until it happens that we are truly independent creatures we are always tied to our relationships.
