Cyrus Sutton Converts His Dodge Sprinter | Van Life With A Professional Surfer

Cyrus Sutton is a filmmaker, professional surfer and van life OG. He’s been living and converting vans for the past decade and has traveled them throughout US, Mexico, and Canada. He initially moved into a van to get out of his parents’ house; since Southern California’s rent is so high, it would’ve drained his resources, so he decided to go the Van Life route. We met up with Cyrus in Venice, CA to take a tour of his van, surf and get a tour of his camper.

The van is a 2002 Freightliner Sprinter extended wheel base diesel. What was originally a plumber’s vehicle, then a pet grooming van, subsequently turned into Cyrus’s new project which him and a friend built together. Inside it’s a very simple and open spaced layout which was done because as Cyrus states, “The more storage space you have the more crap you have.” A couple call out features of the van is the wood burning stove which was originally put in because of how wet it was living in the Pacific North West. There is a ton of rain which caused some mold issues with the wood and due to the dry heat of the stove, it cleaned it right up. He has a 2-burner stove fueled by the propane tank off the back of the van. A really cool concept is where the murphy bed drops down and lays right next to the sink which makes it easy to make coffee in bed. A favorite is the hammock which allows him to hang out next to the fire or out the sliding door.

Cyrus has been living in this van for the past 5 years and his home base has been tethering between Ojai, California and Skamania County, Washington. He started his career as a professional surfer and blended that passion with his skill of videography to create a profession within that industry. More recently he creates social and environmental impact films that have a sense of adventure and has directed five award-winning feature documentaries and over 50 short films. His most recent film is called “I AM THIS” which is a visual feast blurring boundaries between ourselves and the universe, see below.
