A radical mastectomy involves removing the breast, lymph nodes, and chest muscles due to cancer. It's the most extensive breast cancer surgery, targeting not just the breast but also lymph nodes and muscles underneath. Lymph nodes connect vessels in the lymphatic system, which circulates lymph fluid. If cancer spreads to these nodes and muscles, a radical mastectomy is recommended. This surgery changes the chest's appearance and may reduce arm strength. The procedure involves two incisions around the breast, lifting the skin, and removing breast tissue, muscles, and lymph nodes. After ensuring all cancer is removed, the incision is closed, and a bandage is applied.
