Stompin' Tom pulls an "all nighter" at the Tilton Hilton - 1990 -Here's the back story

On July 23, 2026, Duncan and his show will return to Hilton Beach and perform their Stompin' Tom show, Believe In Your Country. For tickets, call 705-246-2422.

In 1990, Bar River native Duncan Fremlin arrived in Algoma (Memorial Gardens in the Soo) with the man himself, Stompin' Tom Connors - as manager of Tom’s “Believe in Your Country Show”. One of Duncan’s jobs, besides providing security for the quarter inch unfinished plywood slab that Tom stomped on each night, was to oversee the entire operation and make sure everything was operating problem free and on schedule.

The morning after the Soo show, Duncan woke up in a third rate motel room on Great Northern Road (the only kind of motel Tom would stay at) hoping to grab a quick breakfast before their caravan of cars and vans hit the highway to Thunder Bay, the next destination. He stepped out of his room and standing there was Tom’s steel guitar player, Mickey Andrews. “Tom isn’t in his room” was all he said and Duncan’s heart rate quickened immediately.

The day and night before, even during the show itself, Tom had been drinking beer. According to Duncan, “that’s what Tom did all day, every day.” His first thought was, “This can’t be happening. He must be in his room” but “no” said Mickey. “I just checked”.

As it turns out, one of Tom’s old friends from St. Joe Island, a drinking buddy that he knew from his Royal Hotel appearances in the 1960’s, took Tom to his home on St. Joe Island for more beer drinking. Tom eventually made it back to the motel.
