Jerry Cantrell - Degradation Trip

Released 15 years ago today, "Degradation Trip" is Jerry Cantrell's second solo album. This album is unique in that Jerry went through a lot of obstacles to have it released. In late 1998, Cantrell locked himself in his Washington home and wrote 25 songs. He rarely bathed or left the house and often ordered out for food. The subject matter is similar to that of Alice in Chains, Jerry's then former band, with much of the lyrics revolving around depression, addiction, isolation, loneliness and frustration. Two tracks ("Bargain Basement Howard Hughes" and "Locked On") are obviously about the feelings Jerry had toward former AIC frontman Layne Staley. This album is the first to not be under Columbia Records and first not to feature AIC bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney. To distinguish himself as a solo artist, Cantrell opted to replace the former band members with Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin of the Ozzy Osbourne Band. Many of the tribulations Cantrell faced were a result of losing his contract with Columbia Records and having difficulty finding a new record label. Ultimately Roadrunner Records signed him on and agreed to release his material if it were condensed to fourteen songs. The remaining eleven tracks would be released five months later in a double disc re-release. Citing difficulties with producer Dave Jerden, who produced several of Cantrell's AIC albums, he ultimately decided to self-produce the album along with his friend Jeff Tomei.
