Doai: Japan's Deepest Train Station

A walk through Japan's deepest operational train station - Doai in Gunma Prefecture, on the JR Joetsu Line - and the surrounding area. There are 462 steps and 143 metres from ground level to the northbound platform (the southbound platform is above ground). There is no elevator or escalator. Very eerie ambience - cold, dark and misty with the sound of dripping water echoing around the place. There is little to do in the immediate vicinity (although there is an abundance of natural beauty) - I just went there to check out the station! As, it seemed, did the few other people I ran into there. The place was virtually empty though - the station is unmanned, and there are only ten trains passing through daily (five in each direction). Interesting use of the final day of my Seishun 18 ticket & highly recommended for railway fans.
