The Enigma of Korean-Italian Cuisine 👀✨️🌱 Pickles 🥒 Pizza 🍕 Pasta 🍝 Korean Food

Stop scrolling because I bet you don’t know about this life-changing cuisine that has been in your local food scene for years.

Korean-Italian food is a necessary and welcome phenomenon that you may never have heard of. There are many wonderful fusion cuisines worldwide that you may not have tried, but this one is literally in our backyard.

Delicious seafood pastas, housemade pizzas, creamy noodles, and more. All served with sweet and sour pickles. Yes, you heard me right, pickles. It’s a thing, and it’s giving.

I first discovered how different Korean-Italian cuisine is from what I am accustomed to in the US, by seeing it in a K-Drama called “Pasta” 파수타 in 2010. I was intrigued by the entire underlying conflict in the drama regarding the basement making of pickles to go with the pasta. While the chef was constantly firing everyone that wasn’t following his vision of what authentic Italian pasta should be. He was constantly being undermined by employees making and serving pickles to customers directly. Customers were complaining and leaving horrible reviews because pickles were not served, as other Italian restaurants in Korea clearly serve to go along with the heavy, oil and cheese comprised, pizza and pasta dishes served. I’ve never heard of pickles as a mandatory side to Italian cuisine, specifically the type of sweet and sour pickles offered. So, I had to try Korean-Italian food in Korea to see for myself.

If you haven’t tried it, then you are missing out. These are my top 3 spots for this delicious cuisine, that is totally local and plentiful to the Metro Atlanta food scene.

아르테 Arte is a 2 story cafe that is sweets downstairs and pasta sets upstairs. In the Assi Suwanee Plaza, this location used to be a department store, but now resembles those massive multi-level cafes that you would in Seoul. They have tasty and affordable pasta, seafood, and salads for better quality and lower prices than pasta chain restaurants. The best part, it’s local. Downstairs is yummy 미수가루 빙수 shaved ice and desserts, like their famous 호두과자 (walnut cookies).

하나 분식당 Hana is labeled as a 분식 punshik “snackhouse” or “fusion restaurant", but I think that most foodies didn’t get the memo or understand the assignment here. Hana’s famous logo is a pizza peel! Yes, because they make the best Korean inspired Italian style pizzas that I have ever had. These are gourmet style pizzas, and they are insanely inexpensive for the high quality ingredients used.

Saving the best for last, Poetree Cafe has the most creative and fun recipes. A prime example is their Donpas = Donkatsu + Pasta. Literally, a pasta bowl made of crispy fried cutlet filled with mouthwatering, toothsome pasta of your choice. Aside from the total cottage core vibes here, this place is not only the most innovative, but also totally aesthetic spot you will ever find.
