Lviv is one of the most beautiful cities in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. More than 2.5 (two and a half) million tourists visit it every year! Lviv, which translates as the City of Lions, was officially founded is 1256. The first written record about it was discovered in the annals of the fire in Kholm. This big city is now a cultural center of the region and a favorite tourist attraction for many Ukrainians and foreigners.

The 7th in our ranking is St. George’s Cathedral. This architectural complex surprises with its grandeur and is considered the pearl of Ukrainian Baroque. The cathedral perfectly combines rococo and Ukrainian sacred aesthetics. In the courtyard, visitors can find a magnificent bell tower. Since 1998, the complex has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In the 6th place is the Lviv Opera House. It was built at the turn of the 20th centuries in the Renaissance and Baroque styles. The building is rich in sculptural relief. Its interior is adorned with marble, gilding and decorative paintings. The lyre-shaped auditorium consists of the ground floor and three galleries. The opera house has 44 boxes and seats 1,000 spectators.

One of the most popular places in Lviv, the Market Square, is in the 5th place of our ranking. This location was frequently used for shooting films about old Europe. There are eight streets leading from the square in different directions. Many touristic routes start from here. Each house in the Market Square has a unique architecture. Here stands the City Hall – the main gem of the square and Lviv’s most recognizable symbol. This building attracts the attention of thousands of tourists thanks to its amazing arrangement. In the 4th place of the top attractions in Lviv are the Latin Cathedral and the Chapel of the Boim Family. Latin Cathedral / Chapel of the Boim Family The foundation of the Roman Catholic cathedral was laid in the middle of the 14th century. Its construction took more than 100 years. The building is a three-aisled basilica, greatly outstretched from east to west. The Boim chapel stands near the walls of the cathedral. It was built in the 17th century over the Boim family crypt. Next to it used to be the municipal cemetery, which was later relocated outside the city. Currently, the chapel is one of the departments of the Lviv Art Gallery.

In the 3rd place is another religious building, the Bernardine Church and Monastery. It is a complex brick building with a square courtyard. The history of the church began in the middle of the 15th century, with the arrival of Bernardine monks in Lviv. They built a wooden temple outside the city, which was repeatedly destroyed during the siege. Due to its location, the shrine had been acting as Lviv’s fortification for many years.

The Dominican Church is in the 2nd place of our ranking. This is the most grandiose building in Lviv in terms of architecture, which reminds the famous Western European monuments. Its impressive dome is one of the most visible and characteristic local landmarks. Nowadays, the monastery complex hosts a museum of religion, and the cathedral is passed over to the Greek Catholic community.

We gave the 1st place to a well-known landmark of Lviv – Mount Vysoky Zamok, which translates as High Castle. The mount is located near the historic city center at an altitude of more than 400 meters. In fact, the Lviv castle has long been destroyed, and only its name and a cozy park on the site of the fortress cherish its memory. A spiral labyrinth-style footpath leads to the observation deck on the mount. Here, visitors can enjoy the panorama of the whole City of Lions. In good weather, the Carpathians are visible on the horizon.
