A Day in the Life of an Anglian Water Apprentice

Anglian Water has announced plans to recruit more apprentices than ever before in it’s biggest ever recruitment year.
The bumper crop of 65 apprenticeship places is up for grabs with the water company throughout the region.
This year’s apprentice positions include opportunities to train as mechanical and electrical engineers as well as technicians maintaining the water and sewer networks throughout the Eastern region.
Three types of programme are offered:
• A four year programme which will see successful applicants trained up as electrical and mechanical engineers before starting work as Maintenance Technicians once fully qualified.
• A shorter, 18month programme is also available for apprentices training to become Network and Leakage Technicians which involves delivering part of Anglian Water’s ongoing £60million war on leakage and providing the best service to customers.
• There are also apprenticeship roles available at several water treatment and water recycling centres where budding technicians will help maintain the essential water and sewage infrastructure our region relies on.
Half of Anglian Water’s apprenticeship roles are open for applications from today (Saturday 4 March), with the rest apprenticeship and trainee positions opening for applications in May, including a number of graduate positions too. Stacey Gibson, from Anglian Water’s apprenticeship programme, said: “Maintaining Anglian Water’s network of water and sewage pipes, pumping stations and treatment works is a vital job. The people on the frontline of our business are there to ensure we get clean water to customers’ homes and businesses 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
“Roughly a third of our workforce will retire in the next decade and we want the best and brightest engineers and technicians from this area to leave school and join our business through the apprenticeship programme. Apprenticeships are a great way to ‘earn as you learn’ and with the prospect of a permanent job at the end of your training, and great career progression. Many of our apprentices have gone on to become senior managers within Anglian Water, so it’s a fantastic step on the career ladder.
“Anglian Water’s apprenticeship programmes are also vital for providing varied and diverse opportunities for talented young people across Suffolk and Essex and future-proofing our region’s economy.”
This year the company is aiming to increase the number of young women apprentices entering the industry. Anglian Water has long been a supporter of Women in Engineering to address the gender imbalance in the engineering sector nationally.
To be eligible for an apprenticeship applicants must have five GSCEs (or equivalent) with grades A to C including Maths and English. Once qualified trainees will be earning around £24,000, plus a range of excellent benefits, such as a company van for some roles.
