Meet Uma: The Autonomous AI Operator & Digital Twin for Vertical Farming
Say hello to Uma—the autonomous operations intelligence layer and physical digital twin designed for vertical hydroponic agriculture, built by The Utility Co LLC for the Hackstrom 2.0 Hackathon.
Vertical farming is highly productive but incredibly labor-intensive. A single chemical deviation or environmental imbalance can ruin an entire harvest in hours. Uma solves this by bridging the gap between agronomic telemetry and autonomous mechanical physical control.

📊 REAL-TIME DIGITAL TWIN TELEMETRY
Uma runs a 3D digital twin replica of the physical vertical farming facility. It continuously monitors fluid dynamics, solution temperatures, dissolved oxygen, and reservoir pH levels over active crop towers.
🧠 AUTONOMIC INTERVENTION LAYER
When a cascade anomaly occurs (such as a strawberry tower pH spike), Uma identifies the spike and executes targeted tool calls over a GraphQL API to adjust centralized dosing pumps, restoring equilibrium autonomously.
🎙️ BIDIRECTIONAL REAL-TIME VOICE AGENT
Featuring a hands-free, low-latency dialogue pipeline powered by Azure OpenAI. Technicians on the farm floor can interact with Uma naturally to parse hand-drawn sketches, generate digital twins, or inspect system states on the fly.
✉️ HUMAN-IN-THE-LOOP ORCHESTRATION
For physical requirements (like foliar sprays or root inspections), Uma drafts a detailed pathology assessment via Computer Vision leaf analysis and instantly dispatches structured work orders to field technicians via AWS SES.
