You might be very familiar with the gear lever and you know that they are used for gear shifting. But, do you know why we need to shift gears and how the gear shifting affects the engine speed? If not, this video is particularly meant for you.

In this video, we have clearly explained what a gearbox is, how does it help in changing the speed of the vehicle and the direction of the drive.

Gearboxes are two types - Automatic Gearboxes and Manually operated gearboxes. Manually operated gearboxes can be further classified into three types:

1. Sliding Mesh Gearbox
2. Constant Mesh Gearbox
3. Synchromesh Gearbox

In this video, we have also explained the construction and working of the most simple type of gearbox - Sliding Mesh Gearbox with its advantages and disadvantages. We’ll be covering the other types of gearboxes in the upcoming videos. Stay tuned.
