Construction of Longannet started in 1964 and the station started generating electricity in 1970 but it wasn't until 1973 when came fully operational. the station was originally designed to run for 25 years the station continued long past this and an average powered over 2.5 million home per year a head of its closure in march 2016 in its 46 years of operation the vast complex was home to a family of workers the beating heart of a community that was maned 24 hours a day 365 days a year the station was unusual and it lacked cooling towers instead using water from the river forth for cooling in its life time over 60 billion cubic meters of cooling water passed through the power station the power stations closure in 2016 signaled an end of over 100 years of coal fired electricity production in Scotland and the station is a regional landmark, dominating the Forthvally skyline with its 183 meter tall chimney.
