This film will take a look at Chevrolet’s 1979 Chevy Blazer, Van and Sport Van. It opens with the information that the Chevy Blazer was more popular than any other sport sized utility vehicle. Another name for the Blazer was the GMC Jimmy and these were produced during the model years of 1973 to 1991. Standard features on all four-wheel drive models included reversed arch tapered leaf springs, a rugged stabilizer bar (:29), rod calibrated shock absorbers (:38), and fade resisting power front brakes (:43). They were all designed with steel frames (:46) with alligator jaw type cross members (:49). Other features included counter angled rear shocks (:59), rear brakes with bin drums (1:03), and brake lines that were now wrapped in exposed areas (1:07). The framework is seen put together in an assembly line in factory (1:23). The hood was made with double walls of steel inside (1:27) and a rear side panel was added to the frame (2:11). Anti-corrosive measures included dipping the entire body and doors into an electro magnetically charged resistant and primer (2:42), an acrylic enamel spray (2:51) and an aluminum wax preservative spray (3:01). Chevrolet offered four different power plants for the Blazer (3:28); the 4.1-liter V6, 5.0-liter V8, 5.7-liter V8, and the 6.6-liter V8. A demonstration follows of the Blazer towing a boat (3:52) and then two Earth Movers (4:08) as it had the ability of towing trailers weighing up to 6,000 lbs. Some of the available features included the extra capacity fuel tank (4:29), off road tires (4:41), and a removable hard or convertible top (5:08). 1979 Medium Duty Trucks (6:07). It opens with a montage of the range of medium duty trucks (6:24) and then shows the GM assembly plant (6:55). The warehouse included a computer-controlled system (7:00) which could read thousands of parts and components and send them to the assembly line during appropriate times. Chevy frames in single axel models began with high carbon steel full channel side rails (7:31) and included alligator jaw type outer ends (7:44). The suspension capacity ranged from 11,000 lbs. to 23,000 lbs. (8:15). In addition, six GM and Eaton single speed rear axles were available from 13,500 lbs. to 22,000 lbs. (8:34). The tag axle model was completed with a 32,000 lb. rear suspension which used either Rockwell or Eaton axles (9:03). Cast spoke and disk wheels were made available with a wide range of tires (9:39). Engines and transmissions hang inside the plant (9:48) -- one V6 and four V8’s (9:52). The 7.4-liter V8 was a new addition for 1979 (6:01). Transmission types included four, five and thirteen speed manuals (10:18) and three automatic transmissions (10:23). The mediums had either hydraulic or full air brakes and a selection of boosters and components were made available (10:57). Reinforced floors (11:14), and single piece door frames (11:20) with double walled panels. To prevent corrosion, the entire frame was dipped into electro magnetically charged primer (11:34) and a heavier cab undercoating (11:48). Power flow through ventilation (12:26), air conditioning, and easier to read instruments follow. Durable vinyl upholstery and an alligator type hood came standard (12:51). After the Chevy logo appears (13:41) the film turns to 1979 Vans and Sport Vans (14:27) which include the Chevy Van, Sport Van, CaraVan and the Nomad. The CaraVan was made with a partially completed interior for the do it yourself buyers (15:02). The Nomad was a station wagon marketed in 1955 to 1961, from 1967 to 1972 and then used as a trim package during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. It was considered a combination cargo and passenger van (15:14). The Sport Van could seat anywhere from four to twelve passengers (15:20) and included bench seats (15:30) as well as a strong light weight welded construction (15:42). The heavy gauged steel panels were welded instead of bolted to the underbody (15:50) and side panels were seamless and welded to the floor (15:56). These were also dipped in the anti-corrosive electrically charged primer (16:18). The entire body as well as doors were sprayed with an acrylic enamel (16:36) and an aluminum wax preservative was sprayed onto lower door surfaces and inner rocker panels (16:43). A demonstration follows including 183 baskets full of peanuts poured into the G30 Chevy Van to show it could hold nearly its own weight (18:32). This segment wraps up with a list of the available engines (18:45) and the Chevy logo (19:33).
