Ukraine is investigating reports that a drone dropped chemical weapons on Ukrainian forces in the southeastern port city of Mariupol, under siege for weeks, Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said on Tuesday. The US and UK said they are working urgently to investigate these unverified reports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday that Russia could use chemical weapons in Ukraine and called on the West to impose strong sanctions on Moscow that would deter even talk of the use of such weapons. Eduard Basurin, a spokesman for the Russian-backed separatists that have seized control of Donetsk, denied allegations that chemical weapons had been used against Ukrainian troops.
