Diabetes in pregnancy in an other wise non-diabetic woman . Is it possible? Yes how does it develop how does it affect your baby and how is it managed well diabetes lifestyle diseases so even if you are a non diabetic woman but during pregnancy there is a stress on your body. So these diseases tend to decipher them themselves. How it is it is diagnosed? During your routine visit to the obstetrician you will undergo basic simple tests for blood sugar namely the glucose challenge test the GCT and the glucose tolerance test called the OGT either of these tests will be able to pick up the fact that you are developing diabetes in pregnancy which is also called the gestational diabetes type initially if the blood sugar levels are only marginally raised you will be advised the medical nutrition therapy which means that in elaborate diet chart will be prepared for you and a basic exercise schedule will also be advised. You will be called back after a few weeks and after this if your blood sugar levels have come down to normal than you you will be advised to continue the same medical nutrition therapy for the rest of your pregnancy along with follow ups while in spite of the nutrition therapy if your sugar levels are on the higher side then you will be started on treatment a word about treatment of diabetes in pregnancy . Insulin is the mainstay of treatment because it does not affect the baby in the uterus while all the other medications which are recommended for pregnant women are not advised during pregnancy because they can affect your baby. The second thing one needs to understand is how does diabetes occur in pregnancy affect the baby it can have very detrimental effects on the growth of the baby it can result in babies with large birth weight it can increase the amount of fluid around the baby called the amniotic fluid this can result in preterm before these babies are prone to developing jaundice after delivery they are also prone to developing respiratory distress. Both of these things may need a NICU admission. These babies also have to be very close after delivery for developing hypoglycemia that is low blood sugar levels especially in the initial few hours after birth as diabetes in pregnancy can be very detrimental for the baby and a close watch is needed on the patient during the pregnancy as well as after delivery. One word of caution if the sugars are not managed well during pregnancy it can result in intrauterine death of the baby in the womb. So this has to be taken seriously and the doctor's advice has to be followed.
