Music and film can be easily distributed to billions of people. When you think of the words "director" or "actor," what do you imagine? Probably people shooting film, right? Sadly, a lot of people have forgotten about the very origins of film; theatre.

Some people think that, because we can record film now, we don't have a need for theatre. But that couldn't be further from the truth! Theatre is alive and well today, and it is an entirely different art form. While many Hollywood actors have gotten their start on Broadway and through other theatre companies, the truth is that acting onstage requires a very different skillset.

Furthermore, writing for theatre is very different from writing for a film. A script for a play needs to be realistic to perform onstage. You can't add fancy special effects or camera angles! Stage actors also have to learn to exaggerate their voice, body, and facial expressions in ways that film actors don't. Acting onstage means you are performing for audience members potentially hundreds of feet away. You need to be loud and your movements need to be obvious in order for any audience member to understand both your words and your movements.

Sadly, despite their wonderful talent, not many playwrights and theatre directors earn as much fame as people who work in the film industry. Of course, it makes sense, because theatre is far less accessible to the general public than movies. Still, it's a shame that so few people have the opportunity to appreciate the art of theatre. So many great playwrights' names have been lost to time, except to a select few.

Sam Shepard is one playwright, however, who should never be forgotten. This prolific playwright, actor, and director has changed theatre and even made an appearance in several award-winning films. Sadly, he died in 2017, but his memory lives on in the people who honor his work and legacy. In today's video, we're going to look at how his career bloomed before ultimately ending in tragedy. While his life may have had a devastating end, during the height of his career, he was, and is, one of the most highly awarded people in his career field. Make sure you stick around to find out how he broke a world record and won the highest amount of prestigious awards of any theatre-maker in history!
