MTB Categories: Enduro vs. Cross Country vs. Trail vs. Downhill | SportRx

There are so many bike categories. We're confused. Sunglass Rob talks with Stephane Roch and our guest, Skills with Phil, to highlight the differences between these bikes.

On one side of the spectrum are cross country bikes. These bikes are lightweight, designed for long distance and climbing. However, they’re not forgiving on the downhill.

On the opposite end are downhill bikes. It’s tricked out with a lot of suspension, typically won’t have a dropper seat post, and they tend to be longer bikes.

Another key difference is the “steep” or “slacker” head angle which refers to the angle of the front fork of the bike. A “steep” head angle is closer to perpendicular on the ground while “slacker” will have more angle pointing outward.

Most bikers and their equipment live somewhere in the middle. In fact, there’s a lot of crossover between bike categories, so a cross country bike could handle technical downhill terrain.

Ultimately, as you grow with the sport you’ll consider investing in a quiver of bikes, each bike specifically tuned for your needs.
