Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi is arguably one of the most divisive political figures in South Africa today. His royalty and loyalty have been questioned, his historical accounts discounted. He has been seen as an enemy by both the ANC and the Apartheid regime due to suspicion he was aligned to or working for either. He has been accused of fomenting violence, facilitating apartheid, and being a puppet of the repressive apartheid regime. But he continues to speak his truth, unafraid and unapologetic. Rather than being a traitor or a sell-out who aided and abetted or facilitated apartheid, it is worth pointing out that Chief Buthelezi, found himself in a defining moment in the nation’s history, one that demanded him to make difficult but crucial decisions, and he handled each and everyone with grace and grit. Instead of chasing personal ambition or popular opinion, he has been driven by the needs of the people he was destined to lead.
