How To Fix A Smelly Toilet

Richard, our obedient Plumbdog is called out to fix a foul-smelling toilet and gives away some quality plumber tricks on how to diagnose and fix a smelly toilet. It has been a few days that the sewage smell is driving the client crazy and now he is asking for Plumbdog to rescue him from the stink in the toilet room.

Richard checks if there any block in the toilet, he tests this by flushing and sees if the water is draining smoothly. The water level in the bowl did not rise meaning that the drain is not blocked. Next thing that he checked is behind toilet seat base where the rubber pan collar seal is located. This rubber seal should be intact, meaning it must be airtight and watertight. The toilet pan connects the toilet fixture to the sewer pipe.

As Richard inspects further, he sees that the seal has already split and perished, this is where the smell is coming from. An easy fix for this is applying a clear mould-resistant silicone to secure the pan collar. He also combined regular dishwashing detergent and water in a spray bottle, this mix is sprayed on the pan collar. The mixture will make wiping the excess silicone off easily to make the rubber pan collar look clean. This sealed off the gap between the toilet base and the sewer pipe, it is airtight and watertight again. No more foul-smelling odour in the property.
