MIC MICHAELI & IAN HAUGLAND from the band EUROPE in this exclusive interview (special thanks to Mr Staffan!) by yours truly BARBARA CASERTA for LINEA ROCK, backstage (a “No Smoking Backstage”!) at Alcatraz Milano, November 29th 2017… Chatting amiably about the brand new album “WALK THE EARTH”, their favorite songs off it, and how “The Final Countdown 30th Anniversary Tour” influenced it (from their point of view and by the fans expectations). This is definitely a controversial release who divided more than ever the die-hards… This is their 11th album and it comes 14 years after the reunion, just like “Prisoners in Paradise” (last album of the first round) arrived 13 years after the foundation of the band… another crucial moment of their carrer… It has been recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, a magic experience indeed but discover yourself the real trick behind this choice… We also talk about the caos of compiling setlists after so many years, about how their stage setting became more minimalist thru the years especially concerning the keys and drums, and how they live endless touring at this point of their carrer… We then discuss the reborn essence and the spirit behind Europe’s reunion, one of the most authentic ever in rock, and I asked which album of the new course had in their opinion captured their new artistic path at its best… Concerning their "second job" as DeeJays, we discuss the importance of the radio nowadays compared to the past, and they reveal the new music they like and eventually choose to program on their shows... And do they feel someway responsible for the great attention that the scandinavian rock scene got since the 80s? And do they watch Europe old videos which regularly surface on You Tube? Is there any live performance from the past (recent or less recent) that caught their eye in particular? Looking back at the oldest stuff, does it feel and look for them as a different band now? Before letting them go, I offered my deepest condolences to Ian for his recent loss (he lost his son only 15 days prior to this, a sacred topic that I decided not to touch during the interview) and my voice uncontrollably broke into emotion… in the end, we’re only human… Keep on walking... Keep on dreaming...
