Dark Nights: Death Metal: A Complete Guide to DC's Next Event
via CBR.com

After years of anticipation, Dark Nights: Death Metal is about to take over the DC Universe. Here's what you need to know about the crossover event.

After years of build-up, the latest DC Comics crossover event, Dark Nights: Death Metal by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, is finally here. The event has the omnipotent villain Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs reshape the DC Universe in their fiendish image, leaving the reimagined heroes to band together in a desperate effort to liberate their world and save the entire DC Multiverse.

As both the sequel to 2017's Dark Nights: Metal and the culmination of years of DC Comics storylines stemming from the previous event, here's what you need to know before the crossover kicks off, from the stories leading up to the start of the story to the core issues and tie-ins involved that have currently been announced.

The road to Death Metal has been laid since its predecessor, Dark Nights: Metal, which began in 2017. Using various mythical metals in the DCU, Batman inadvertently sent out a signal to the Dark Multiverse, a realm where worlds were formed. The villainous Batman Who Laughs led the Dark Knights, a twisted team of alternate reality Batmen, to invade the DCU while attempting to plunge the universe into the Dark Multiverse. Although the villain was defeated and the DCU was saved, though the Source Wall was shattered, freeing the omnipotent enemy Perpetua who had been imprisoned within.

Perpetua transformed Lex Luthor into a cosmic figure, similarly upgrading the villains throughout the DCU while rallying them to her cause. As the Batman Who Laughs escaped captivity and began corrupting heroes on Earth, the Justice League assembled heroes from across the DC Multiverse to confront Perpetua and her army. The League put its faith in the people to support them, however, the populace was seduced by Perpetua's dark promises of selfish greatness and abandoned them. The Quintessence, the five most powerful heroes in the cosmos, gave the League one last chance to defeat Perpetua and restore reality, albeit at considerably higher stakes.

The core Death Metal series is slated to run through January for seven issues, with a break in September. As with the previous Metal crossover event, the main story will be self-contained within this core series, while tie-ins, both in ongoing series and a line of special issues and miniseries, will enrich and expand the overarching story and its expansive, DC Multiverse-spanning cast of characters.

So far, tie-ins through September have been officially announced by DC Comics. These include Death Metal: Legends of the Dark Knights this August, which will explore the backstories of the various evil Batmen that appear supporting the Batman Who Laughs, and the Metalverse Guidebook, which will showcase the new DC Multiverse that has been rewritten by Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs as they reign over their conquered worlds with an iron fist.

September will see the release of the tie-in specials Speed Metal, Trinity Crisis and Multiverse's End, which covers how the crossover impacts the Flash, the trinity of Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman, and Perpetua's rampage on the wider DC Multiverse, respectively. Speed Metal has Wally West targeted for his new Doctor Manhattan-level powers, with his fellow heroic speedsters providing back-up. Trinity Crisis has the core trio confront the reimagined Anti-Monitor in an epic showdown. Multiverse's End features a ragtag group of heroes from the DC Multiverse as they stage their last stand against Perpetua's army as the villain continues her conquest. Additionally, writer Joshua Williamson and Xermanico will kick off a tie-in run on Justice League, with an arc beginning in September that ties into the crossover.

Snyder also hinted that October will include at least two additional tie-ins, with The Robin King and The Last 52. The Robin King was previously teased by Snyder as one of the scariest characters he had ever co-created, likely another villain from the Dark Multiverse summoned by the Batman Who Laughs to carry out his bloody bidding on Earth. Without elaborating, Snyder also revealed that more tie-ins and crossover stories in existing titles would be unveiled for November and December, with the possibility for more to be added ahead of the crossover's end in January.
