How To Use A Light Meter (Part 1)

We're often asked how to use a light meter so we thought we'd best make a couple of videos to explain. The first thing you have to know is that your camera's light meter is NOT always right and can get the exposure wrong http://www.photographycourses.biz/wrong_exposure.html. It thinks the world around us is mid grey and so the exposures it gives you will be for an average range of tones that would equal mid grey when mixed together.

There are two ways to meter light. A reflective meter reading measures the light reflected by what ever you point the camera at. The problem with this is that some things reflect more light than others.

Once you know this you are in a strong position to step in and adjust what the light meter in your camera tells you up or down accordingly.

In part 2 we'll explain how to overcome the problem and how to use a hand held light meter which is way more accurate.
