A **Data Center Tier** classification follows the Uptime Institute's Tier Standard, which defines reliability and redundancy levels. It consists of **Tier I to Tier IV**, with increasing levels of availability, redundancy, and fault tolerance.
### **Data Center Tiers Overview**
1. **Tier I** – Basic Capacity (99.671% uptime, no redundancy)
2. **Tier II** – Redundant Capacity Components (99.741% uptime)
3. **Tier III** – Concurrently Maintainable (99.982% uptime)
4. **Tier IV** – Fault-Tolerant (99.995% uptime)
### **High-Level Design (HLD) – Conceptual & Logical Design**
The **HLD** provides an overall architecture and design strategy, focusing on:
- **Data Center Location & Layout**: Rack arrangements, cooling zones, and power distribution.
- **Network Topology**: Core, distribution, and access layers with redundancy.
- **Power & Cooling**: UPS, generators, HVAC, and environmental monitoring.
- **Security Architecture**: Physical and logical security, firewalls, access control.
- **Scalability & Redundancy**: High availability, failover mechanisms, multi-path routing.
- **Compliance & Certifications**: ISO 27001, PCI DSS, HIPAA, etc.
### **Low-Level Design (LLD) – Detailed Implementation Plan**
The **LLD** provides precise configurations and deployment details, including:
- **Physical & Logical Diagrams**: Rack elevation, network cabling, fiber optics routes.
- **IP Addressing & VLAN Design**: Subnet allocation, segmentation, and security policies.
- **Switching & Routing Configurations**: Protocols like OSPF, BGP, VRRP, STP, LACP.
- **Firewall & Security Policies**: ACLs, IPS/IDS, SSL VPN, Zero Trust implementations.
- **Storage & Virtualization Details**: SAN/NAS, hypervisor setups, VMs placement.
- **Redundancy & Failover Mechanisms**: HA pairs, load balancing, disaster recovery.
