At the ALMATY Concert before Dimash came out in his sensational black leather outfit to play the Dombra for ADAI, a beautifully crafted film showing the story of the Dombra was shown on the big screens. Dimash narrated throughout in his deep sonorous tones, and although at the time we didn't understand what he was saying, with the powerful visuals, we got the gist. It was exquisite!

Now we have an idea of what this video was about ... 'The Legend of the Dombra'. ❤️

Musician MEIRBEK AZIMBAEV has very kindly given us the story. I'm not sure whether she has transcribed what Dimash actually said during the video, or has just given us the story ... either way it's fabulous to know the story behind it! She has given the translation in Russian and I've translated it to English.

THE LEGEND of the DOMBRA

"The son of the Grand Khan of the Golden Horde, Zhosha (Joshi), while hunting wild kulans (wild horses), became so engrossed in his archery that the group escorting him lagged far behind. The prince's arrows struck the running kulans with such accuracy, there was no mercy for the poor animals. The leader of one herd of wild kulans, known as the 'Lame Kulan', was strong and courageous, not even afraid of wolves (it was in a fight with these gray predators that his leg was once injured). [During the hunt] Lame Kulan suddenly turned and pounced on the hunter Joshi. Lame Kulan's attack was so daring and ferocious that Joshi flew off his horse, broke his neck, and died instantly. The herd of kulans, freed from persecution, ran freely to the steppe expanses, with the leader Lame Kulan in the lead.

None of those close to him, or the servants, dared to tell the Grand Khan of the Golden Horde about the death of his son. Bringing bad news, according to the ancient custom, would lead to death for the bearer. And then the Great Singer Uly Zhyrshy - the wise old Ketbugha, fashioned a Dombra from a birch tree, put strings to it; and when he arrived at the Palace of the Great Khan, fell to his knees before the throne. The great Khan, sensing that the wise old man had not come to him with good news, asked him darkly: "What do you want, great singer?""
But the Ketbugha said nothing. He began to play on his birch Dombra a sad tune - a Kui.

This Kui, with magical sounds, told the whole story of the young prince's death at the hands of Lame Kulan, without a word being spoken ...

The Great Kyushi finished playing the Dombra, without uttering a word, but the Great Khan and
everyone else understood everything that had happened by the sound of the music: the Dombra conveyed the stampede of jumping horses, the anxiety of the kulans for their young and weak foals, and the strength and wisdom of the leader Lame Kulan guarding his herd. The Dombra sounded especially mournful when depicting Lame Kulan attacking the prince ...

Khan was silent for a long time, and those surrounding him dared not make a sound. Finally, the Great Khan spoke: "You have brought me the terrible news of the death of my son. I understood everything listening to your Dombra. You are worthy of death for this bad news, but since you yourself did not utter a word, let your dombra be punished. Fill her throat with lead!”

And so in this way, thanks to the sage Ketbugha, the great Kyushi, the death of the young prince was reported to the formidable lord of the Golden Horde of the Mongols. And despite the terrible custom, no one was hurt. And the birch Dombra, for bringing the black news of the death of the prince, had hot lead 'poured down her throat'. And so, from that time, there has always been a hole on her flat side ..."

💢 What an awesome concert this was! It was my fifth live concert and was like no other. Dimash was magnificent! He looked and sounded like a singing God, and in his own homeland he was comfortable and radiant. He shone like a jewel and commanded his crowd of thousands with ease!
