"When the clock struck a quarter past eight, Ella was certain that Pedro was still so cross with her that he didn’t even want to take her out for dinner any more. The growing anger in her chest was only overridden by worry. Even at his most angry he would at least send a cancellation note.
At half past eight Ella knew she had to do something. She already had sat in the parlour for over an hour, fully dressed for an outing and so she bid the housekeeper farewell and went to the public telephone on the corner of the square and rang her aunt Margaret. She told her about her worries, and Margaret concurred with her that something had to be done."
