How I Organised My Garage
Efficient garage storage and organisation has been something I've iterated and tried to perfect over the years. There are a great many videos on technical solutions for garages that basically just show you how to build shelving units. But there seems to be a lack of interesting discussion around creating meaningful and useful 'systems' (conceptually) to organise your garage things! Hopefully this video can become part of that discussion.
Given that we end up storing such a large amount of stuff in our garages there is a constant battle of potential over-filling and risk of any system breaking down. A big part of that happens when you find yourself moving one thing to get to another. Avoiding that was one of the priorities of the system I designed here.
I store 3 bikes, car tools, roof basket, bike racks, DIY tools, paint and decorating stuff, a tumble dryer and all the other general bits and bobs that end up being stored out of the house. With my garage I make things even harder for myself by restricting the storage side to being only about a third of the garage size. This is great as it means the rest of the space is a really fun play space with a climbing wall for the kids.
There are two design philosophies that underpin the system here. These are:
1. Simple enough to be repeatable every time you access something and put it back.
2. Items need to be 'indexed'. Either with a real index or as a by-product of having single depth shelving where all items are actually visible.
I'm very interested in efficient ways to organise things and would love to hear how you organise things in your garage in the comments below.
