John-Luke Wall w/ Edible Wild - Love is Cruel ReMix

John-Luke Wall plays acoustic bass on Love is Cruel with Cary James and the Edible Wild, a 90's Alternative Rock band in St. Louis, MO.

Meaning behind songs offers a common experience. We all have our own lives and bring our experience and level of understanding to each instant of our lives including listening to a song. Concert attendance is a common experience as is listening to a song together with friends. Today, most of us experience a new song when we are alone listening to it on a cell phone or computer. Therefore, knowing what the artists' intention was while composing the song provides a common context for listeners.

First recorded in St. Louis in 1994, Love is Cruel was not our Magnum Opus, but was one of our most requested songs. Cary was known to a very few people to change lyrics to songs on the fly. Playing small clubs and coffee shops when we first started, one of our major supporters was MoKaBe's. It was a new coffee shop owned by three lesbians, Moe, Kate and Beth. When we played there, Cary would change not only the gender of the pronouns in songs, she would add entire new verses extemporaneously.

Few recordings of The Edible Wild survive. In the case of Love is Cruel, five partial verses remain in written form four of which are complete in versions that I play solo. I will record it with three verses. The vocal "eew's" over the Chorus were also liberally and unpredictably used by Cary. I will likely only use this feature once at the end of the song when I record it. What we end up doing live? I make no promises...

This is the first verse of a re-mastered audio track from a youtube video uploaded in 2010 of a 1993 analogue recording made in a home basement studio and burned on the only CD "burner" in St. Louis at the time. Owned by Guitar Center, you had to "get on the list" and wait several weeks to rent the machine that would "wash" the mix and burn one CD at a time... State of the art for up and coming musicians in the early 1990's...

The song is about a difficult predicament too many young adventurous girls find themselves in. The decisions we make we live with for the rest of our lives, particularly when they involve other lives. Right and wrong fall to the wayside when we are just trying to survive. The wayside is where we find the discarded items, some memories and some regrets, and sometimes others who are just trying to survive as well.

Character is made not so much by the decisions we make - so many influences and so much is beyond our control - but in how we respond in the aftermath... Do we reflect and do we learn.

Oh, by the way, love is not cruel. Some people are, but love is NOT cruel. Don't lose faith. Remain forever Grateful!
