6 - The Useful Citizen

In this session, we investigate "The Useful Citizen"—the legal and economic construct used to domesticate authorship during the industrial revolution. We explore how the framing of creativity as a "Social Utility" allowed the state to enclose the "Record of Sweat" in exchange for the promise of national progress. This is the origin of the "Patent Thicket."

The discussion deconstructs the "Incentive Trap" of the 19th century. We argue that by narrowing the definition of authorship to "Useful Innovation," the law effectively excluded the biological and visionary substrate of creativity. This "Utility Filter" created a "Forensic Inversion," where the value of the author was measured by their ability to serve the machine, rather than their ability to command it.
