Accomplished lawyer and human rights advocate Joe Middleton talks about how he abolished the mandatory death penalty in the Belize Central Prison and how he does work in many other countries, carrying out human rights work.

Joe won the 2015 Bar Pro Bono Award for his human rights work around the world. He is recognised for his contribution to the abolition of the mandatory death penalty in several African countries and his work on human rights in Belize Central Prison. Joe’s areas of work include immigration, extradition, death penalty litigation and other complex constitutional and human rights challenges. He is a fluent Russian speaker and has acted in many different courts and tribunals, including the UN Human Rights Committee, the Privy Council, the UK Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights.
