STORYLINE:

Former Russian President Boris Yeltsin had lunch with French president Jacques Chirac at the Elysee palace on Friday.

Yeltsin, who is on a private visit in France, was accompanied by his wife Naina, his two daughters Tatyana and Elena, Elena's husband (Valeri Okulov, CEO of Aeroflot) and his grandson Ivan (son of Elena).

Looking healthy and alert, Yeltsin told the press that "the most important is not to loose this strong friendship that we have created ourselves."

He described their friendship as being "key for stability in Europe and in the world."

In addition to his quintuple heart bypass surgery in November 1996, the 71-year-old, has suffered from a series of other ailments, including back trouble.

He appeared increasingly shaky and frail during his second term in office, which ended with his surprise resignation on December 31, 1999.

Yeltsin has spent most of his time out of the public eye since he resigned leaving then-Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in charge.
