In This video, Captain Pedro shows you how to measure stone crab. Stone crab fishing is harvested during the stone crab season which currently runs from October 15th through May 1st each year.

Florida stone crab is one of the most expensive seafood that you can buy due to its labor-intensive work to harvest the stone crab claws. Commercial fishing for stone crab or stone crabbing is done with stone crab traps. The stone crab trap is placed on the ocean floor with bait to attract the stone crabs.

Measuring the stone crab claw correctly is instrumental in the sustainability of the stone crab fishery. Only legal sized claws can be harvested and only the stone crab claw can be harvested, and the crab is then returned to the water. The crabs are returned to the water whole because the stone crab has the ability to regenerate their claw making Florida stone crab fishing a very sustainable fishery.
