A recent IIT Roorkee study warns of the increasing threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in High Mountain Asia, including the Himalayas. Over 31,000 glacial lakes are rapidly expanding, putting over 9 million people at risk. These lakes, held by unstable dams of ice and rocks, are vulnerable to bursting due to climate change. GLOFs, like the 2013 Kedarnath disaster, can cause widespread destruction, threatening communities downstream.
