--- Specializing in the musical traditions of Latin America's largest nation, the University of Florida's Jacaré Brazil represents the most diverse performance ensemble of its kind within a university performing arts program. Each semester, specific repertoires combine these sections into unique ensemble groupings featuring guest artists of faculty and students (undergraduate and graduate) from within the School of Music, other units on campus, and the wider music community.

Celebrating Brazil's 200 years of Independence, tonight's concert features Jacaré Brazil's unique ability to explore the music of Brazil from a choro perspective. We feature several instruments-flute, clarinet, guitars, cavaquinho (Brazilian ukulele), piano, sax-soprano, cello, and pandeiro (Brazilian tambourine)-in lead melodic roles within Brazil's instrumental style known as choro (literally "crying,"). Choro music was first developed around 1870 in Rio de Janeiro among serenading musicians (chorões) who formed small ensembles of "light" instruments such as flute, clarinet, cavaquinho, violão(six-string guitar), and pandeiro. They performed a repertoire of sentimental songs (modinhas) and fashionable cosmopolitan social dance genres of the day (polkas, tangos, waltzes, schottisches) mixed with syncopated rhythms derived from Afro-Brazilian influence. Performance practice evolved around a combination of written and improvised elements as choro musicians elaborated on the basic melodies and developed a dialogic interplay between solo and accompanying parts. The structural form of most choros follows a rondo-like ABACA formal design with sectional repeats and harmonic movement to closely related keys. Some of our pieces follow associated musical forms such as AABAABA, ABBACCA, ABA coda, AABBCCA coda, and .AABBAACA

A fresh view of the music of distinct Brazilian composers, this performance proposes an encounter of popular and classical musical forms. The guitar, perhaps the most popular musical instrument in Brazil, functions as both a soloist and accompanying instrument throughout the concert, transforming European-derived genres such as the gavotte, mazurka, and waltz and the uniquely Brazilian genres choro, baião, and maxixe. Note that we play the guitars with different roles in the accompaniment, including the classical six-string violão, performing the harmony; a second classical guitar performing the "baixaria," or bass accompaniment countermelodies in some pieces; and the cavaquinho, playing the rhythmic accompaniment for the styles. The piano exchanges the melodies and accompaniment to fulfill the composers' stylistic intentions. The melodic instruments will change melodies and countermelodies throughout the concert.---
